DVR Internet Systems - The Way to Make Security Video Access Storage Simple

Digital video recording systems with internet connectivity have taken home and business security to a whole new level, especially when they're coupled with a broadband internet link that can transmit video to personal computers and smartphones. On-the-go people are increasingly turning to internet and smartphone application integration to keep an eye on things at home and business. Thanks to a DVR internet camera system and a smartphone application, it's a little easier to relax on vacation in Fiji knowing you can check on things at home by simply turning on a cell phone application.

A variety of applications available to smartphone users now make it easier than ever to connect a DVR camera system to an online connection that sends updated video feeds directly to the phone.

Many of the phone applications, even some that are free, offer up to four video feeds on one screen. This makes them ideal for business owners who want to keep an eye on multiple retail locations at one time.

Inside Look at a Moment's Notice
The convenience and ease with which smartphones and some DVR internet systems can be integrated are also freeing business owners and families alike from the typical worries they may face when they're away. For example, if you have placed your DVR cameras strategically in either large areas or small areas, now you can check on your home or business for items left behind or appliances left on in haste, no matter where you are. Another favorite pastime of homeowners is the flexibility to monitor the family pet after a long day at work. Now it's as easy as logging in via your computer for a quick peek at Fido.

Video Storage Security
DVR internet systems typically store video to a hard drive or attached storage device, but some can also be linked to the internet to have video relayed to a secure online storage location if necessary. This makes the systems valuable for insurance purposes in case of fires, tornadoes or extreme disasters that might also destroy any video stored on local hard drives housed with the system.

Remote storage also protects your video footage from criminals who may be more savvy than the average criminal, preventing them from destroying a video storage device or taking it with them.

The digital internet system is a valuable tool for securing the safety and peace of mind we desperately need.

Managed Internet Security: Could This Be the Right Solution for Your Business?

Managed Internet security is a popular solution for many businesses, and can be surprisingly cost-effective.

For nearly all businesses today, an Internet connection is indispensible. However, an Internet connection opens up your business to all manner of new threats, such as viruses, hackers, bandwidth theft, or inappropriate internet use by insiders. There is a very real need to take steps to safeguard your firm's information security. However, many businesses, especially smaller firms, lack the relevant technical expertise and resources in-house. For them, the right solution will managed internet security, whereby their computer security needs are outsourced to a specialist security firm to be managed on their behalf.

The growth of managed Internet security is a logical extension of the outsourcing of business processes that has been known for many years, such as the outsourcing of the payroll, finance, IT or training functions. However, as a relatively recent development it lacks the high profile available to these other outsourced business processes. This is regrettable, since managed Internet security is a vital development in the on-going fight against computer threats, and can form an essential part of a firm's information risk management strategy.

There are several areas where an organisation's computer security can be outsourced to specialist firms, such as the following core aspects.

Monthly web application scanning services: Regular monthly security scanning of your web applications can be indispensible in identifying vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers. The automated scan should ideally be supplemented by a manual review by an experienced tester, as automated tools will not yield all possible data on their own.

Monthly network vulnerability assessments: In a similar way, a monthly review of your network's security can catch problems before hackers find them, so that they can be corrected. This regular scan will complement the less frequent full penetration testing.

PCI Audit: This type of testing is mandatory for all companies licensed under the Payment Card Industry (PCI) regulations. It needs to be undertaken regularly by a suitably qualified company.
Your company's managed internet security solution can also be complemented by outsourcing your general information security management needs. This can be either on a permanent or a short-term basis, making use of expertise from a specialist computer security firm.

Whatever type of service is selected by your business, you will almost certainly find that it is more cost-effective than developing the same resource in-house, especially in the case of smaller companies that do not have the resources to hire their own specialist staff. The managed Internet security solution is also more flexible, in that it can be discontinued at short notice, or alternatively increased at short notice. It avoids the need to acquire specialised technical software, or to spend time keeping one's technical knowledge up-to-date. For all but the largest companies, therefore, managed Internet security is a clear winner in terms of cost versus benefit, and should be seriously considered by all companies with an Internet connection.

What to Consider When Looking for an Internet Tablet

Internet tablets offer a variety of media features that allow users to stay in touch with the fast paced world around them while being mobile and away from your PC or notebook. There are many different internet tablets offered to consumers today and figuring out which one is the right choice for you may depend on what you are looking for.

The first thing you want to consider is how user friendly these devices are. Internet tablets are portable and offer you a lot of great features such as a camera and recording devices. Watching movies and playing games on large bright screens are other great features that you can find with almost all Internet tablets.

The next thing to consider when investing in an Internet tablet or as some others may call it, a tablet PC, is that you will want to consider what type of operating systems the tablet runs on. Most people will look at the obvious when researching internet tablets, portability. They make sure that it fits right in a purse or back pocket and they may also make sure there is enough memory space so they can save all of their pictures, games, and movies. They will also keep in mind how much it costs to keep the device active and current.

Perhaps the most difficult decision will be choosing between the endless brands that are available for Internet tablets. There have been a lot of news and reviews concerning internet tablets but some brands that have been generating a lot of positive buzz are Sonos, Archos, Dell, and ViewSonic. The Archos tablets are one of the Android tablet models along with countless others to choose from. Price range and powerful features are things that will continue to change in 2011 as more announcements of more tablet PCs are coming out daily as manufactures continue to introduce and release their new models.

Something else to consider when investing in a portable tablet will be sound quality and what to do when you are not travelling and enjoying the portability of the tablet PC. Investing in wireless speakers would be a great way to get the most out of your tablet while you are watching videos, movies, or playing games. Listening to your music collection has never been easier since you can connect your internet ready tablet to external speakers so you will be able to enjoy it in the comfort of whatever place you choose.

Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11 Released

Opera has now taken the two browsers to their next evolutionary step. Opera Mini has now been taken to version 6 and Opera Mobile is now Opera Mobile 11. Today we will take a close look at both of them.

Opera Mini 6

The biggest addition here is pinch to zoom, which wasn't available before. If you tried to pinch to zoom in, the browser would jump directly to 100 percent zoom level or get back to the full page view. There wasn't a finer control over the zoom level. Now, if you pinch, the page zooms in gradually and you can stop whenever you want and the browser will stick to that zoom level. You can select the maximum zoom level from settings but one thing we noticed was that unlike Opera Mobile, which allows you to zoom past the setting you have selected in the menu, Opera Mini stops zooming when you reach the selected zoom level. There is a new Share function as well. In the Symbian version that we reviewed, we got the option of sharing the current page on Facebook, Twitter or on My Opera. In the Android version, it gives you access to a lot more applications to share a link.
Opera Mini 6 for Symbian is now a native Symbian application, instead of J2ME.
Apart from these additions, Opera Mini 6 is identical to the previous version.
Opera Mobile 11
Opera Mobile 11 has most of the new additions that Opera Mini 6 has received. It already had the pinch to zoom feature, so that is unchanged. The Share feature does work differently though and is oddly crippled here. In the Symbian version, we only got the option of sending the URL through an SMS or via Bluetooth. There was no mention of Facebook or Twitter sharing.
In comparison to Opera Mini, Opera Mobile is a lot smoother. Pages also looked a lot better and more accurate. The text also looks a lot better when you zoom in or out. If you have a smartphone that supports Opera Mobile with a decent connection plan then we would advise using it over Opera Mini. If you are on Symbian, there are no two ways about it; Opera Mobile 11 is the browser to use.
Overall, both the new browsers are good improvement over their predecessors, Opera Mini 6 more so than Opera Mobile 11. Then again Opera Mobile was fine to begin with so that's still fine. With new features such as Flash support and special versions for Honeycomb tablets (which we couldn't test for obvious reasons), Opera Mobile is poised to take away market share from established browsers.

Google: Do What I Say, Not What I Rank

So I’m doing a little spying on a search engine competitor for a particular keyword today. The site I’m looking up is one I’ve seen just ahead of me, fluctuating between position 1 & 2 (I’m at 3-4) for some time. I figure it’s got a pretty well established position.
I go to Yahoo Site Explorer, and check out their backlinks. There are tools to do this, but I don’t mind this free tool for checking backlinks – a good tip for those of you looking to do the same.
My goal is of  course to see if they have any backlinks that I could replicate. Maybe a blog they commented on where I can comment too… a forum or a profile site where I can get a link as well.
This particular site owner, despite ranking above me for a significant period of time, didn’t have any links worth replicating. In fact, I couldn’t believe what I saw. This site, ranking above me for a mid level competition keyword, had about 170 backlinks, I estimate about 160 of which were… directory submissions. Yeah, I mean like website directory submissions. Remember that ancient form of back link building? And they weren’t even good directories… sites like (fictional) seobacklinksdirectory.net – directories obviously created for SEO function (ie “manipulation” of search engine rankings through backlinks).
THAT guy, with THOSE links, is ranking above me. I don’t mean to brag, but I have some pretty rad links. So much higher quality than these links it’s not even a discussion. But it gets more weird…
I do a search in Google for their links… good old “link:” search. Google shows ZERO links. I’ve heard it said for a long time (but not had it confirmed more recently) that Google only shows backlinks from sites above a certain age or PR… so that isn’t so surprising. What’s surprising is that despite that… the site is RANKING in Google.
So let me be clear:
Google doesn’t show any of their links, but they’re ranking the website. That means they’re obviously counting the links, even though they don’t appear in a link: search (important to note, for those of you who check your own backlinks regularly). They’re ranking this website when all they have is crappy, low quality website directory links!
[On a side note, it was interesting to see that this site owner had so many of these directory listings indexed... I suspect they fed their list of submitted URLS that contained their link, through some kind of pinger to send extra spider activity in their direction, causing all the directory listing URLs to actually be indexed and "count" as backlinks - more on that another time]

What does this tell us? Here’s what it tells me:

For all their talk… for all the fear mongering… for all the algorithm changes…
Google still just isn’t THAT good at judging the “quality” of a link. And for the most part, they’re still running on the same old algorithm rules they always have done. They rave on and on about all these different kinds of links they think are bad, and they will devalue, and tell us to focus on “natural” link building methods but it’s all BS.
Not just Google either. People in forums everywhere run around scared about a “penalty” they might get for some link they built… Nope. Don’t think so.
Like take this video that one of our readers pointed out last week (thanks DK!) – It’s Matt Cutts talking about how he expects that in the future, links from Article Marketing will be devalued…

Oooooh, I’m so scared!
I’m sure that when Matt looks at a republished article, he can tell it’s from a “low quality” site… Pity the Google algorithm can’t. His own company’s algorithm can’t even tell that a link from a spam web directory with a domain as blatant as “seolinksforyou.info” is low quality! Yeah, I’m sure article marketing links will get devalued… If spam web directory links haven’t even been devalued yet, I wouldn’t hold your breath.
Bottom line: This doesn’t mean you should go out and build a bunch of crappy links. What it does mean is that, when trying to determine what works and what doesn’t when it comes to SEO, don’t listen to Google reps, don’t listen to (most) SEO teachers… listen to the algorithm! Watch, and experiment for yourself to see what works and what doesn’t.

Do This Before You Enter Any Niche

Today we’re going to talk about a tool that I’ve never had much love for, but that more recently I’m growing increasingly fond of, as a way to confirm in my mind that a niche or affiliate offer is really worth going after. I’m going to tell you the tool, then 3 things to watch out for when you search for your niche there.
Ready?
The tool is called… (you’ve definitely heard of it before) Google Trends.
Particularly when I’m thinking of starting a site around a particular affiliate offer (like one whole site just for this offer) I want to know that it’s going to get traffic and make money not just in the short term, but the long term as well. Further, I want to know that the people who are searching this term are people I can actually sell to. Because as Google Trends shows us, search volume can often be very misleading.
Here are 3 things I look out for, with some screenshots to help illustrate.

1. Where Are Your Searchers?

I came across a product this week who’s search volume looked strong. Competition was low, payout was good, I was about to pull the trigger. Until I checked GTrends. Here’s the image of what I saw, below:
gt1
Note: The majority of the searchers aren’t from English speaking countries. In fact, there wasn’t an English speaking country in the whole top 10. What does that tell me?
Well in terms of data, not much. But I can make some guesses about what this says, that make me uneasy about entering the niche with a whole website.
Firstly, I don’t know what the complications are for people searching for this keyword from those countries, and finding my site. Will they even find an English language site – like will it appear in the index? Even if it will, how can I know my English pre-sell copy will appeal to them? What’s more, you’ve got a couple of poorer Eastern European countries in there that you can be sure don’t (as a whole population) have the same level of access to credit cards/disposable income (to spend on objects like this product anyway).
Of course, those aren’t things I know for a provable fact – maybe I will stumble across this pocket of wealthy, irrational Slovenians with perfect English who are begging for this product, though it seems less likely -  but the inferences aren’t without merit. And when it comes to setting up a business in this niche (which is what you’re doing) the suspicion is warranted and basing a decision on it, legitimate.
I skipped that niche for these reasons.

2. Downtrending Volume

The next graph actually highlights my next two points: (This one was NOT a niche I considered entering, but illustrated this point well)
gt2
When a search volume chart had a high a few years back and is really trailing off now, it should be a sign to think twice. Of course a lot rides on how high the search volume was initially, and where it’s trailed off to. So if where the volume has trailed off to is still high relative to other markets, it might still be worth entering, but you should tread carefully, and think twice about a single product focused website.
And there are other volume trend patterns to look out for too…
Sometimes you’ll see big swings in the volume through a year. Like if you see a big high then a big low, then a big high etc you have to understand that entering this market will mean a volatile traffic pattern, and a volatile income pattern. Don’t expect steady monthly income from that niche. If the commissions are big and conversions high, it might still be worth it, but again, GTrends will tell you exactly what you’re getting yourself into.
Obviously the best sign is if the volume has stayed steady (like in point 1. above) and/or increased with time.

3. Searchers For The Wrong Reason

The final point is illustrated above too. Check out the news articles to the right of the graph. Most of them are negative.
If a product you want to promote gets a boost in volume because of a big whack of negative publicity, it’s of no value to you. You’re not going to sell those people who were researching Acai Berry to find out about all the online scams for it. We don’t know what percentage of the search volume were represented by each of those articles, but when we see a spike on the graph when a negative article occurs, it tells us something.
One negative article in the mix is nothing to freak out about, but when you see a volume graph that’s being carried by spikes of traffic associated to negative comments, it should be a reason to think twice. You have to confront the reality that even though a product gets 100k searches a month, if 80 000 of them are searching the term because they heard it was a popular scam, you won’t be making so much money.
But it’s not just negative comments either.
The news articles you see on the right of the graph will also tell you whether the RIGHT people are searching that term. Example…
A niche we entered last year looked to have big search volume for the main keyword, let’s say the keyword was SuperX (the brand of a pill for example). GTrends told me that SuperX was ALSO the name of this power company in India that got headlines because it was involved in this big buyout, and people had been talking about that forever. Result? A lot of the search volume I thought was there, wasn’t. Another thing GTrends will reveal to you.
So those are the big 3.
I hope I’ve made it clear why I think this is something you should do before entering any niche. The time and money it could save you will be well worth the 15 seconds a search will take.

Gmail Now Supports 12 New File Format Previews Via Google Docs Viewer Including Microsoft Excel, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop And Autodesk AutoCad

More then three years ago I blogged about "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats" allowing users to open newer Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 file-formats in older versions of office and received an DMCA take-down notice from Microsoft for directly linking to the file, I am not sure what pissed Microsoft off but one reason could be forcing users to upgrade when an alternative option is not known or easily available.
Thanks to Google Docs Viewer users can now view 12 new file-formats apart from existing PDF, Microsoft Word documents and PowerPoint presentations - the new supported formats are Microsoft Excel (.XLS and .XLSX, Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 / 2010 (.PPTX), Apple Pages (.PAGES), Adobe Illustrator (.AI), Adobe Photoshop (.PSD), Autodesk AutoCad (.DXF), Scalable Vector Graphics (.SVG), PostScript (.EPS, .PS), TrueType (.TTF)and XML Paper Specification (.XPS).
Google Docs Viewer
Users will be able to view these file-types using the “View” link in their Gmail attachments, users can also use the Google Docs Viewer service directly to make use of the viewer separately.
