How Does An ITIL v3 Certification Work?

If you work for an IT group, you probably already know that ITIL is the big thing in helping IT groups help their company. This has been made clear thanks to thousands of references to it in meetings, support for its principles, and clear admiration for it in general. Not surprisingly, there is a not so subtle push to have employees get the training. But with the tough economy, many companies have been unable to fund this training themselves. So it has been left up to the employees to take up this cost and get the training. However, this really doesn't give them an idea of what they are signing up for. Here, we take a closer look at how an ITIL v3 Certification works.

The certification process works by having employees attend classes either online or in an in-person class setting. These classes or courses are offered by a number of programs, schools and groups and these can be found on the Internet by doing a simple Internet search. The structure of the training is to have students take multiple classes that work towards various levels in the certification process.

In the v3 Certification process, there are 4 levels: Foundation, Intermediate, Expert, and Master. To reach each level, you will need to take a certain number of courses. Actually, you are given a number of credits for each course and you will need a certain number to get to the next level. For example, you will need 15 total credits to get to the Intermediate Level.

The courses themselves will key on teaching you how to use the ITIL best practices and concepts. These courses are on a number of different areas in the delivery of service. In many cases, people will have the ability to choose from a number of different courses giving them more flexibility in what they learn. There are only really two required courses with the other courses elective.

The courses themselves may have a varying number of classes depending on the program offering the course. However, a good rule of thumb is to assume there will be 3 to 5 classes per course. Of course, by taking several courses, this can add up to a decent amount of class time and time spent preparing for the classes. Fortunately, with so many different programs offering the training, you should be able to find an option that can fit into your schedule no matter how busy it may be.

By keeping all these points in mind, you should have a better understanding of how an ITIL v3 Certification works. Perhaps now is the time you got yours.
