Wireless Energy transfer has been the dream of many a physicist, and there have been a number of breakthroughs in the last few decades. Now things are really looking forward to that potential eventuality and remarkable, almost magic like future. In human history terms Tesla's Wardenclyffe Tower energy transmission scheme and concept was not really all that long ago. And as any engineering student will tell you; efficiency is lost when power moves through power lines, cords, or any other medium, power is also lost due to batteries draining.
There was an interesting article recently in Energy Daily Online News posted in the Energy Tech Category titled "Novel Man-Made Material Could Facilitate Wireless Power" written by the Staff Writers in Durham NC on May 25, 2011. The article stated that their new material is not really a single material but rather a composite of several materials, regardless it works.
"In fact, the metamaterial used in earlier Duke studies, and which would likely be used in future wireless power transmission systems, resembles a miniature set of tan Venetian blinds. Theoretically, this metamaterial can improve the efficiency of "recharging" devices without wires."
Now then, perhaps this is why I am such a big supporter of "pure research" and applied science when it comes to alternative energy, and not so keen on the "subsidy" side of things, as that just gets too political and involves too much crony capitalism, making free-markets weak and as inefficient as moving energy through power lines you might say, well, compared to the prospects of this awesome new technology and innovation.
One has to ask if science took the wrong branch on the proverbial tree of science and discovery, perhaps this technology has been available all along, but no one put two and two together, and Nicola Tesla is long gone now. We already can send microwaves, radio frequency power, and we even have those cool little charging stations that you can set all of your personal tech devices on without adapters, cords, or power hook-ups to charge the batteries.
This new technology, if they build it, it just takes all that to a higher level you see, and it has endless applications if you scale it up, or even if you scale it down. Consider this a potential breakthrough in the making. This is why we need to fund pure research, so we can bring these innovations to the forefront and then let the entrepreneurs in the free-market take it from there. Please think on this.
