Court reporting equipment is used by a court reporter to record court proceedings, transcribe depositions and pre-trial proceedings as well as business proceedings, provide closed captioning and real-time translation services to persons who are unable to see or hear. Hence, the reporters make the use of coded letters for certain commonly used words. In order to pass the Registered Professional Reporter Test (the official licensing test for court reporters), a court reporter should be able to type over 225 words per minute on this machine. Traditional stenograph machines used to generate a paper transcript. However, modern machines permit the transcript to be transferred on to a computer which then interprets the shorthand.
•Stenomask- A 'voice silencer' or a stenomask is a piece of equipment that covers the speaker's mouth like a mask, and which has an in-built microphone. With the 'mask' on, it permits the reporter to speak into the hidden microphone and repeat everything that is being said in court. The mask silences the voices from the outside, and muffles them from the microphone. This equipment also enables the reporter to issue any instructions to the person who will subsequently transcribe the audio. Reporters using this equipment can exceed 180 words per minute and that too with a minimum of inaccuracies.
•Computer- Court reporters require a PC compatible laptop as part of their equipment in order to take down notes, and send and prepare transcripts. In addition the PC can be linked to the stenotype machine to enable real-time captioning. As soon as the reporter keys in the symbols, the text appears on the screen. This process, known as CART (Communications Access Real time Translation), is used for closed-captioning for the hearing impaired.
•Audio Recorder- The new age of court reporting is electronic reporting. Electronic reporters make the use of audio recorders, both digital and analog, to record legal proceedings. This electronic recording process is overseen by a reporter who simultaneously takes down notes on the court proceedings. This recording system can link the reporter's notes to the corresponding links in the recording. The transcript can also be transferred to the Internet.
•Software- In addition to the above, there are a number of software programs that are used by reporters in their stash of court reporting equipment. Recording and transcribing software are used by digital reporters as well as voice writers.
